Hangover Prevention
From the information we've
learned about hangover causes, we can figure out methods of hangover prevention.
Remember that a hangover is caused by dehydration, low blood sugar, depletion
of vitamins and minerals, and chemicals such as acetaldehyde and cogeners.
Here are some steps you
can take to aid in hangover prevention:
- Stay hydrated. Drinking
alcohol will quickly drain your body of liquids. An important part of
hangover prevention is replacing at least some of that water as you
lose it. Drink water or fruit juice. (No, more alcohol will not help
to re-hydrate you!) Fruit juice is a good choice because in addition
to putting water back into your body, it also increases your blood sugar
levels. Drink some fruit juice before you start on the alcohol. Drink
some fruit juice in between your alcoholic drinks. Drink some water
or fruit juice before you go to bed. This will help you avoid dehydration
and prevent the hangover it brings.
- Eat before you start
drinking. Drinking on an empty stomach is a bad idea. You can help
to prevent a hangover by eating something before you go out. This will
help to dilute the alcohol in your stomach, thus keeping it from irritating
your insides as much and letting your body absorb it more slowly. It
will also help to keep your blood sugar up. Foods that take a long time
to digest are best. Try some bread or pasta.
- Take vitamin B6 before
drinking. Some studies have shown that vitamin B6 can help to reduce
the severity of a hangover. Vitamin B6 is available at most pharmacies
or health food stores. It is also an ingredient of many hangover prevention
pills.
- Drink clear alcohol.
Dark alcohol like red wine, whiskey, and tequila contain more cogeners.
Clear alcohol like gin, vodka, and light rum contain fewer cogeners.
Since the amount of cogeners left over to torment your body in the morning
has a lot to do with the severity of your hangover, sticking with drinks
made from the clear stuff can help a lot in the prevention of a hangover.
- Don't mix your drinks.
Since different types of alcoholic beverages contain different types
of toxins, do yourself a favor and stick with just one type of drink.
Your body will have an easier time breaking everything down and you'll
have an easier time in the morning!
